Seit Monica denken kann, ist Fussball Teil ihres Lebens. Mit 13 schnürte sie erstmals die Schuhe – heute, viele Jahre und viele Hürden später, bedeutet der Sport für sie mehr denn je: Freiheit, Abstand, Kraft.
Kraft, für welche die 40-Jährige heute wahnsinnig dankbar ist. Denn Monica weiss, wie es sich anfühlt, wenn das Leben schwer auf den Schultern lastet. Der frühe Verlust ihres Vaters, die Narben einer schwierigen Kindheit – all das trägt sie bis heute in sich. Zusätzlich kommen in ihrem heutigen Alltag immer wieder Herausforderungen dazu: eine kleine Tochter mit besonderen Bedürfnissen, ein Job als Kurierin, eine Beziehung, die manchmal wankt. Doch beim Fussball kann Monica einfach Monica sein, hier zählt für einen Moment nur sie. Sie schätzt den Zusammenhalt im Team, die Freundschaften, und sie erfreut sich immer wieder daran, ihre eigenen, aber auch die Fortschritte im Team zu spüren.
Die Women’s Streetfootball EURO und später auch der Homeless World Cup in Oslo werden für Monica ein Abenteuer und auch ein Abschied auf Zeit von Tochter und ihrem Hund. Diese Vorstellung gibt ihr ein mulmiges Gefühl: «Ich sorge mich ein bisschen, ob die beiden ohne mich klarkommen.» Doch dieses Risiko nimmt Monica auf sich: «Die Menschen bei Surprise tun so vieles für uns, das uns gar nicht bewusst ist. Ich möchte mit meinem Engagement etwas davon zurückgeben.» Monika will an den Turnieren nicht nur für ein gutes Resultat kämpfen, sondern auch für das, was ihr wichtig ist: Fairplay, Freude und die Kraft, immer das Positive zu sehen – selbst wenn das Leben einem Steine in den Weg legt. Ihr Wunsch: Ein Turnier voller Fairplay, Spass und verletzungsfreier Spiele.
For as long as Monica can remember, football has been a part of her life. At 13, she laced up her boots for the first time — and today, many years and many obstacles later, the sport means more to her than ever: freedom, distance, strength.
Strength for which the 40-year-old is incredibly grateful. Because Monica knows what it feels like when life weighs heavily on your shoulders. The early loss of her father, the scars of a difficult childhood — she still carries all of that with her. And on top of that, there are constant challenges in her everyday life: a young daughter with special needs, a job as a courier, a relationship that sometimes falters. But on the football pitch, Monica can simply be Monica — for a moment, it’s just about her. She values the team spirit, the friendships, and finds joy in seeing her own progress as well as the team’s development.
The Women’s Streetfootball EURO and later the Homeless World Cup in Oslo will be an adventure for Monica — and also a temporary farewell from her daughter and her dog.
The thought makes her uneasy: “I worry a bit about whether the two of them will manage without me.” But Monica is willing to take that risk: “The people at Surprise do so much for us — often more than we even realize. I want to give something back through my commitment.” At the tournaments, Monica not only wants to fight for a good result, but also for what truly matters to her: fair play, joy, and the strength to always see the positive — even when life throws stones in your path. Her wish: a tournament full of fair play, fun, and injury-free matches.
